Throughout the end of 1971 the future of BAF remained in limbo fueled by rumors and speculation. It was assumed that BAF would be lost in the Transmeridian operation. However, BAF was operated as a separate company. Combined advertising literature showed the Carvair but it was dominated by the ability of the Transmeridian CL-44s. British Air Ferries was slowly merged into TMAC operations but remained under BAF colors. Transmeridian advertised in Flight International for 10 more CL-44 crews to increase the fleet to nine aircraft.
It is of interest to note the parallels of Carvair and the 747, which first flew in 1968. The 747 is similar in profile for the same reason as the Carvair, straight in loading. Boeing gambled its future on the development of the 747 and believed that it would be relegated to an all cargo role after the SST (Super Sonic Transport) became operational assuming a decline in passenger traffic. The 747 was designed as a freighter with elevated cockpit and nose door to allow straight in loading imitating the Carvair.
Beginning in 1972 the Carvairs were painted with navy blue bottom with white upper fuselage and wide light blue cheat-line retaining the black BAF letters which was the last color scheme for the British Carvairs. In 1973 a Carvair was painted in a special BAF livery to haul racecars. In 1975 another was converted to all cargo and stripped to bare metal in an experiment to reduce weight and increase payload. In June 1977 it received the livery of yellow and black sash on the forward fuselage. One other Carvair received the yellow and black colors.
