After completing the training exercise S/L Birchfield requested a QGH/GCA procedure. Weather conditions at the time were 5/8 cloud at 1,100 ft agl, a visibility of 2,200 yards with a wind direction of 340 degrees at 9 knots. There was also light intermittent rain. During a normal instrument approach the aircraft would have been picked up at around 12–15 miles by which time its height should have been 3–4,000 ft. On this occasion however the first radar contact was at six miles with the aircraft at 2,000 ft.
